This is a very new development
What is to blame for this strange happenstance?
A native Seattleite woman like myself finds certain attributes in men unequivocally attractive.
It's those darn counter-culture boyos sporting their androgynous hair styles. They lurk in the shadows donning vintage tees and old sneaks.
Pouting in dark alleyways waiting to strike poor defenseless women with their disarming, haven't showered in days--too busy reading Faust-- disheveled looks.
I was no match for him.
He was all these things and more. Incense, coffee bean, and curry scents wafted about him. Along the insides of pale arms poems from far away lands were written in short hand and taped to the interior of his car were various obscure prints of paintings.
His speech vague,
lightly touching on existential ideas,
not delving to deep in any one topic--
ether out of respect for my keeping up with his vast intellect whilst allowing me to form my own opinions on things or
he was an Idiot.
He was an actor.
(Note: Not a very good one)
That is until he dropped out of school, left his family and friends to announce he was off to backpack across Europe! How romantic!
(Note: This was a lie. Fruitcake now lives essentially as a hobo up North)
I met him on set for a revival play of a Spanish classic written in the 1600's.
He - haunted, hip, and hushed.
Me- swooning like mad.
Flirtation occurred and a date followed.
I took two hours to pick out the outfit that noted, I was onto fashion but still had my own unique soul thing going. I decided to play up my African heritage (hipsters are nuts for anything vaguely ethnic(less people are likely to know about it)).
My nerves were at an all time high. I kept thinking this kid had to be the single coolest creature I had ever hung with. It was daunting to be around that much pretension, between me, him, and his ego its a miracle I found room to breathe.
Our date consisted of white wine on a secluded waterfront with Nutella and bananas. He brought along his guitar so we could jam.
... I couldn't make this up If I tried...
Two things stood as problems I ignored at the time with this date:
1. It was winter and SUPER FREAKIN cold!
2. His voice was about as melodious as the scrapes and squeaks of a train on a track
Unfortunately I am human thus I was caught up in my indie movie moment and was successfully wooed.
On the drive home I was trapped with my inner monitor screaming at me to prove my interestingness to this new amazing guy. Obviously the best way to accomplish this was by filling every moment with my incessant babbling going on and on and on and on about nothing.
If he was annoyed he hadn't shown it-until we began to pull into my neck o the woods.
"Pulp Fiction" he murmured was his favorite movie. I considered lying and pretending like I too saw and loved this movie, but the fear of him asking me ANY questions about it far outweighed my looking outright lame. He was nice enough about my not knowing the film saying to me I oughta check it out.
Hippster McHip gave me a brief plot outline and about this woman/how apparently there is this guy that works for her husband and is told to take her out. When the man in the movie does its understandably awkward. During a lull in the conversation she says something that really stuck with him- he goes on the quote this.
"Don't you hate that? Uncomfortable silences. Why do we feel it's necessary to yak about bullshit in order to be comfortable? That's when you know you've found somebody special. When you can just shut the fuck up for a minute and comfortably enjoy the silence"
...
Needless to say that shut me up pretty dang quick.
and thats something that has always
stuck with me
even when that was the last time we ever went out.
